Ive seen other articles about this, trepidation. It was used to relieve pressure from a head wound, and in a more nonsensical way it was used to cure mental illness. Its still practiced in africa, and maybe south america? Not sure on that one. I saw a picture of a woman who kept having it done, till she had to wear a hat to protect her brain from the sun. I guess that intense a form of it is pretty common.

Migraine treatment

Ever experienced that pulsing sensation trapped in your head and you felt like you wanna rip the top of your head off? To give it space? I do.

In those days, they probably thought it was a spirit trapped in the head.

Yeah I can imagine the surgery working.

I don't think it was treatment for mental illness, it was unheard of. Cos magic mushrooms and stuff would ironically give you what looked like mental illness, so they looked upon it as good.

Mental illness meant you were communicating with spirits.

That is a very interesting post. You have hit upon something interesting here. I believe that there is a thin veil separating the worlds and mental illness causes that veil to become ever thinner and I dare say that some patients do encounter spiritual entities and have genuine spiritual experiences.
Also what the scientists cannot explain in terms of psychic experience they tend to put down to psychosis.

They probably usually did it to treat traumatic brain hemorrhage caused either by being clubbed on the head or falling and hitting it, same as today. They were pretty smart. Trepanning for a migraine or spirits would be pretty dumb - you would never get a positive outcome to reinforce the use of the practise.

You would probably only trepan for a head injury, and it would only work if the bleeding was under the skull.

You can be right, we need more finds of Bronze Age skeletons with these man-made holes in skulls. If the skeletons show scars of battle then that proves your theory.

I've had to puncture my nail before to relieve the pressure after partially crushing it against steel. The relief was instantaneous. Have to heat a needle up red hot and do it carefully.

At a surgery (where the same thing had happened to it), they used a specialist thing that had flanges on it to prevent it going too deep.

I think wakypedia is wrong when it says it's Tepanning for finger nails, trefining is the term.

Well said, but for smaller holes like in a fingernail I would maintain the term trefining is used as colloquial terminology in surgeries in English-speaking realms...

At least that's what medics and nurses used when I was in that scene.
