It was ernie balls I was told to use when I started playing guitar.
Then when I got my 1st bass they came loaded with Elixir nanowebs. What happened with them is they would last for ages but you would get what I thought was dead skin trapped between the windings,actually turned out to be a plastic coating.
I found this out after reading boiling strings takes them back to life. Boiling nanoweb strings makes the plastic peel off like a leper.
It wasn't till I got my Ernie Ball music man, that came loaded with D'darios ironically, that I prefered the D'darios over all other strings.
Never tried any other type of winding than round. Played a bass with half wounds.
I'll have to try different types of windings now.
