i know the feel, 3-4 years ago i still had shit bass but it was better than nothing, my rig was a dean black V plugged into a shit 10watts kerry king guitar amp...it was good enough to play alone, anyway i never was good enough to play in a band or nothing

Yup! Flatwounds are king! I'd really like to try a set of half/ground wounds for that in the middle sound, but that's a mail order thing. Flatwounds just get better with age and, hense, sweeter. Lots of fundamental! Plus, they will last for years.

There are a ton of web sites and books you can buy.

Theory, part writing and composition are nothing but a set of rules. Take for instance the standard 12 bar blues, its a set cadence and progression, its a rule, if you dont play it correctly it isnt 12 bar blues.
The whole "cant end a progression on an augmented fifth" type stuff is shit tou know in your head, you know when something sounds like shit, or incomplete.

Over centuries ppl have figured this out and written it down. Thats all theory is.

Imo put to memory all basic scales then move to the more comolex stuff like minor 7 flat 5 (basic minor scale but flatten the fifth and seventh interval as well).
Learn to play all scales everywhere on the bass. Sysly even playing straight major all on the E string type stuff.

That will open your playing up big time and your chops will get immensly better also.

This book tought me way more than theory, comp and partwrting classes ever did.

This is the stage that I am at with augmented and diminished notes but is this not the modes?

I would be good to ask questions and get information on things I might be skipping over.

Iirc, (its been almost 20 years). Your correct, take the diatonic scale (major). Its also called aolian mode. So if yo where to compose a piece in aolian mode every chord progression must be major (also called true minor) and start on the root of the major scale.

But if you take the mode part out you could change to different scales other than major within the composition, and also not need to start on the root, however, the piece would no longer be aolian mode.

The diff modes are all just sets of rules the composer must follow to stay within certain parameters of tones that are supposed to invoke certain feelings in the listener.

Kinda like "disco bass mode" where you always start at the root and end on the first octave. Lols

I did in the beginning think the different modes were just the intervals for different keys of a scale.

I'll have to study it a bit more to geread to grips with it.

I would also like to learn how chords are constructed for playing other instruments like piano.

Its all the same bro, applies to any instrument. If you want to rly get into the theory stuff go buy a cheap keyboard and learn to play piano. I tried, its hard as fuck so i ended up just barely passing piano classes.

I was under the impression a synth was a little more advanced than a keyboard.

That was the part that threw me off. Im not sure you can even find an electric keyboard that plays just the piano tones, they are all snyh computers id imagine.

I havent seen anything modern at all but the last key boards i messed with could make just about any sound you could think of. As well as record and playback loops, some even had disc drive type computer things. At that point i would say those keyboards are synth machines.

They are cool because like you where saying, you could lay a horn track without having horns. Lol. Or just loop a percussion track to jam around.

From what you said about synthesisers making the music I got the impression it was more geared towards producing music than playing music.

I like the instrument sounds the Keyboard player in Rammstein gets.
