Using your own server links you to a dedicated IP (which is sometimes convenient, or even necessary by the website in question), while using a VPN provider the IP you use is shared with other users of the server. This makes collecting info about you harder (harder to correlate different requests). Obviously, this is moot if the provider is compromised. Also, choice of IPs for same price. Also, no headache setting up openvpn.
I wouldn't be surprised if most of these basic bitch vpns are worthless, tho. Nevertheless, here are more random ones to add to list, that at least use a token system for account management: mullvad, cryptostorm.
PS. If you are after Tor, run your own node don't rely on a "Tor" VPN.
