I wanted a Husky, but it's way to hot here. From my understanding huskies and German Shepards are some what similar.

I'll say Border Collie if you can run them enough.
They read minds.
But, they're more likely to try and sic you on something they find suspicious ... great for alerting though.

I've owned a lot of breeds.

If you want a private bodyguard dog for you and your family.........doberman.

If you want a goofy AF, but killer at time........rottweiler

If you want an inside dog that alerts to trouble........schnauzer

Avoid labradors, golden retrievers, cocker spaniels, etc. When I was ten years old me and my dad went to a "puppy mill" and I thought a golden retriever was such a great dog to have and
my old man sobered me up quick. "When the nigger tries to break in your house or walk in your yard, which is better? A golden retriever to roll over and play fetch? Or a doberman that will chew
that fucking coon's leg off and eat out his eyeball?" From then on there was no question on what I would ever get.

LOL. I had to learn about every kind of pet at that job, so I can field questions about dogs, cats, fish, birds, hamsters, etc. In addition to cats, I've kept fresh water fish for 15 years, had birds, hamsters and a few reptiles.

I suggest a German Shepherd, too out of my own experience. They are both great and obedient companions, very protective to their own family - at all, very family-friendly, are highly eager to learn and pretty easy to accompany to cats and other animals. They're also not the worst breed to start with if you are inexperienced, just make sure though to inform yourself how to train them.
Also, I personally hate how inbred most of them have become. Back in the day their backs weren't bred as low as they are today. Make sure their hip is high like this:

Last but not least, almost everyone I know has respect for this breed and a lot of people are afraid of them.

This is why a lot of police departments in America import their dogs from European working lines rather than use US bred dogs. It's referred to as a "breed split", when you have some lines bred for work and some for show only, they develop different characteristics and eventually become very different from one another because what is desirable in field work isn't necessarily wanted in the show ring and vice versa. It does terrible things to a breed. Take Boston terriers for example. They've been bred to have such large skulls that most bitches cant give birth naturally and have to give birth by c-section. "Free whelpers" that can give birth naturally are very rare and highly prized. And all of it is due to human vanity and selective breeding for looks only. GSDs bred for conformation shows have those low hips and weak back legs from being bred to have a gait that looks a certain way when they're trotting around the show ring. That's it. And look what it's done to them. The dogs suffer so people can look at them and admire their large heads or fancy walk.

I'm of the opinion that dog shows which judge on looks only should be banned, because they are a detriment to the breed's overall health and functionality. It's the same with cats and horses too.

I've owned many breeds of large security type breeds . Dobermans are great dogs , a turbo charged version of a Rottweiler. I like shorthaired breeds that are not bulls in a china shop in the house and that don't require massive amounts of dog food weekly . I have never owned a Rhodesian Ridgeback, tho I have been considering one as the next contender for family member/ security.

Another thing when considering Dobermans , there are American bred/bloodlines and European bred/bloodlines . The European dogs are more expensive, larger with heavier bone and muscle structure and generally a much darker rust and black coat . This is the direction you would want to go.

A Czech wolfdog is pretty awesome, though for a a first dog you can never go wrong with a Golden Retriever and if you want something a bit more 'tough' looking you can never go wrong with a German Shepherd. Czech wolfdog:

I have 2 standard poodles, they're great dogs. Easy to train, smart, loyal, can be a guard dog, hunting dog, or just a pet. Mine do great with kids, they'll pull on their ears and tail and the dogs just take it. They have hair so they require haircuts and they need to be brushed when it gets long. In winter I let their hair get long so they can last longer out in the snow. Don't forget winter dog-boots if your dog is going to be out in the cold.

They're also less likely to have inherited genetic problems like wobbler's syndrome too. Many of the European breed clubs have breed wardens that check out a breeder's facility and dogs before they're allowed to register them.

Czechoslovakian Wolfdogs are very, very, hard to handle. In a lot of parts, they behave more like wolves rather than dogs. They howl, too. They're also hard to train. There's a reason why men bred dogs from wolves instead of just using wolves. Wouldn't recommend it as a guard-dog really. As far as I know, they TRIED to make a better guard dog by this, but failed.
