i've heard greyhounds make pretty good pets, they are low maintenance and they don't shed

edit: you can also get them really cheaply from greyhound rescues

I really like blue heelers. I got one from the pound once that could catch a frisbee as far and as fast as I could throw it. Good thing too because you really do need to exercise those dogs. He never missed the frisbee. He could jump about six feet in the air and snag it. Had two speeds -- in high gear he would get really low to the ground and start hauling ass. Completely loyal and would never run away. He was always deeply offended and let me know it when I put him on the leash. What a great dog.

I'd also say, if you go with this breed, to make sure it has a tail. They use it for counterbalance in the air and on the ground. People cut them off because they think it makes them look tough or so that the tail doesn't get stomped on by a horse or cow, if a working dog. But unless you're going to work it, make sure it has the tail.

There is a variety that is naturally born without a tail called the stumpy tailed Smithfield heeler. Great dogs also.

I've owned pit bulls nearly my entire life. I bought my first one in 7th grade with paper route money.

From my experience, they are extremely smart, loyal and protective dogs. They have a bad rap because they are abused and taught to be aggressive by shit skins. They are a stubborn breed and require firm and strong direction while young. It's not a breed for everyone.

My current pit just turned 10. I can walk her anywhere without a leash, she stays by my side and is in my biased opinion, she is the best dog I've ever met.

They were once coined "the nanny dog" for their loyalty to the family and protection of the children. The first ever decorated war dog was a pit bull and even the little rascals had one.

Amazing dogs in my opinion.
