The pocket hole jig is a simple,but very effective way of joining two pieces of wood together. And since most of the required precision (and skill) is built into the equipment,you can be a beginner,a very-part-timer,or just a plain klutz. And still get results that are acceptable,if not exactly spectacular.

So the next time you need a set of shelves,a kitchen island,or a cabinet of some sort,remember that there's an alternative to IKEA,or garage sales. You can go buy some tools and some materials,and build it yourself.

Will you be able to beat Chinese slave labor prices?

Probably not. But what you can do is come close to Chinese slave labor prices,and wind up with an artifact that does what you need it to do. And,in the process,learn how to do something you didn't know how to do,or get better at something that you kinda sorta knew how to do already.

Very nice jig, I've been thinking about buying one soon. The past couple months I've been really into joinery. The bad thing is it takes so long to make a piece of furniture with joinery. The piece could last for generations but my night stand really doesn't need to last 150 years.

I had some reservations when I bought mine,but quickly got enthusiastic about using it. It produces good results in a minimum time frame,and it's easy to get the hang of using.

The only real downside is having to use the specialized pocket hole screws-which aren't exactly cheap. However,that's outweighed by the ease of use and general usefulness of the whole system.

Oh yes. Most of the stuff I've built managed to stay in the house when She Whose Name Will Not Be Spoke decided she could do better,but I built quite a few cabinets,shelf sets,and the like.

None of it was what I'd call fancy,but all of it wound up doing what it needed to do.

And since the system is relatively easy and fast,I could do all of it in bits and pieces after work and on weekends. There wasn't ever-to the best of my recollection-any single long,involved chore that couldn't be stopped once started.

I guess a good way to put that would be when the witch started yelling and I told her I'd be there in a few minutes,it really was a few minutes.

The indoors stuff that I built-cabinets,shelving units,coffee tables,etc.,no. Those,of course,were in a more or less stable environment,and I never noticed any kind of loosening on the part of the screws.

The outside items-mostly worktables and the like,I have had to occasionally tighten a couple of the screws. Not often,and not many,though. That surprised me,since I figured that the screws would be working loose like gangbusters.

That's cool and all, but what you really need is a shitload of these in different sizes and angles.

Nope. I used those,and am prepared to state,based upon my experience,that the pocket hole system will-usually-work better than those angle clip things.

You can't use pocket holes every where,every time. But when you can,they work very well.

The angle braces would be better if you're doing all your cutting by hand,I will cheerfully admit. If you're going to build anything using pocket hole joints,you have to make accurate cuts. So those would maybe be the way to go if you don't have a chop saw,a tablesaw,or other good way of cutting accurately.

I've had a pockethole jig for three years and never used the fuckin thing. There are far more important tools like bar clamps or impact drivers that you should be worried about.

it may sound retarded to you but to actually see another man that think like them is an absolute must for the single mom raised urbanite boys and young men around here. they have almost been castrated . but they are around here so they understand that just show the way.

i think everyone around doing manly thing should post what they do...all kind of trade and skills.

why should we always let leftists garbage fags the monopoly on doing those kind of thing. as for myself i will do more in the future....

I'm kind of paranoid about the things. I had one come apart on me once. Mostly a bad design,or bad QA on the part of the manufacturer,and no one got hurt. I like them-but can't quite bring myself to trust them.

Excellent idea! I should have thought of it myself.

This is one of the projects using pocket holes. The gizmo in the image is a set of flasks used for green sand molding in a backyard foundry. This was a quick-and-dirty type job,and appearance wasn't important.

Considering that they get filled up with sand,which is then pounded with a rubber hammer,and that I usually forget to store them properly,they've held up amazingly well,with no noticeable loosening of the joints.

I do aluminum out here. I can melt bronze,but-

a)bronze is 10 dollars a pound,and I'm cheap.

b)I use welded steel crucibles that I make myself,and at the temperatures where bronze is pourable,a steel crucible isn't all that far from melting either.
