Yeah, I know. I actually like cats, but I don't like to see them allowed to run loose. They get hit by cars, mauled by dogs or other cats, shot or poisoned by sadists, or just get lost and turn feral. After they're trapped Animal Control allows the owners to pick them up if they pay a fine, but the Animal Control officer says that almost never happens. Sometimes they get adopted, but that's also rare. Sometimes when the AC officer is out I drop off a captured cat at the Animal Shelter myself. It's a depressing place.
Pileated Woodpecker. They're huge. Around here they call them the Oh My God Bird, because when somebody first sees one, they say "Oh My God, what is that?"
A few years back some ornitholgists thought the found a place where there are Ivory Billed Woodpeckers, which are almost certainly extinct. It turned out they were seeing a Pileated. Too bad.
