I know that at least 4 years ago Facebook was shutting down accounts because people mentioned Zuckerberg in marginally critical ways.
Facebook succeeds because the powers that be make sure it does. It's like how YouTube promotes TV show clips that no one watches.
Normies do not have the agency to seek anything out. All you need to do to control a normie is to make sure that your propaganda is the lowest hanging fruit. It doesn't matter if the fruit is rotten or poison, they'll eat it, and come back tomorrow.
Facebook is a propaganda tool and as such it will be pushed regardless of whether or not anyone actually likes it. Just like how shit TV shows no one likes are always "trending," and shit music is "chart busting," and degenerate movies are "critically acclaimed."
Facebook's main reason for being used is that it is tied to so many other things. Your typical normie can't remember a password to save their pointless life, and Facebook let's them sign in and sign up for stuff without them needing to remember more than one password.
