Ancestral Research

It is virtually impossible for me to research my German ancestry from England. There are no centralised and very few digitalised records and the authorities place restrictions on who can access their records [...]

You have to use the church records. Some of them might not be digitised yet. Landeskirchliches Archiv Stuttgart have records going back to the 1600s or beyond in some districts. These are online, but not free unfortunately although the same indices are available via FamilySearch.

Ancestral Research

I have found that the familysearch.org site is a very useful one and it is entirely free. The big downside is that the pedigrees are all public and any Tom, Dick or Harry can change your records.

Best bet is offline DB like Gramps. It can generate lots of graphs, reports, and even an entire website from your DB.

Its DB format is more advanced than GEDCOM, which the majority of sites use. Gramps understands GEDCOM too, but it lacks depth by comparison. Best advice for using Gramps is to read all the documentation before using it. That will save you some in not reinventing the wheel, like setting up your Places tree properly.

The International Society of Genetic Genealogy have a lot of resources such as information on DNA testing for genealogical purposes, Y-DNA family trees, scientific papers, and much more.

Here's something you guys will like.

I recently completed one of those DNA ancestry test things.

But I sent my dog's DNA.

Interesting to see what they'll come back with. Hopefully enough to bury them for bullshit, and crack their scam wide open.

I personally think their IT department has access to IP data, and this is married up with postal address etc.

If they come back and inform me something is wrong with the DNA, fair enough. Should be interesting, though.
