Well you want to get all your parts individually and build it right, you can get an i7, asus, 32 gb ram, solid 2gb video card for 500, make sure its watercooled.

I plan to upgrade as well, I bought the rx560 because the rx570 and 580 have been bought up by crypto currency miners. I plan to upgrade when they're back in stock. Keep in mind the operating system and optical drive are not included on those lists. Newegg dot com has a financing option for your price range and higher, no interest if paid off in a year. I financed because I felt the need to buy my parts asap before they were out of stock.

5-600 including peripherals or not? My rig was just over 500 about 3 years ago and can still run most games high-max with no problems, but that's not including kb/m and monitor. I splurged on those another 220 combined and they're still in amazing shape so no regrets there.

Yea you can get basic kb/m sets for like 15 bucks but it's not the same. The biggest things for gaming are the cpu and gpu, you want them around the same level so you're not wasting money on one bottle necked by the other. Get a power supply that leaves enough room for inefficiency, a case with decent airflow and aesthetic, and ram is w/e you probably won't even use 8 but 16 is so cheap now you might as well.

The only real important thing is make sure the gpu has 3+ gigs of vram. 2 is mostly good, but adding another card won't add to it they basically share it

Frankly, the Logitech K120 (~$20) is perfectly serviceable keyboard with no bells or whistles. I would suggest a gaming mouse, but the lower-end one (Redragon M601, $12.99) is one of the better mice I've used.

Monitors are a take it or leave it thing. I got a Viewsonic 27" 1920 x 1080 that's been enough for me (picked up for $250ish when it was new because I wanted the latest and greatest), but I would be perfectly happy with a smaller monitor (VS makes a 24" for $120). Outside of size, I frankly don't really notice the difference between good and "ok" monitors.

That's what I was saying, that the mouse and keyboard aren't a big deal but are nice if you wanna shell out a good bit more. The monitor I guess you got years ago because I got a 24" one around 100 when I built mine, everything is constantly changing

Where are you guys buying $500 gaming pc's? Off the back of a van in a parking lot at midnight? Jesus, you can't even get a decent video card for under $300, never mind the processor and everything else.

I'd get a big ass case then so you won't be constrained later on. And make sure it's white on the inside. Not only is White right, it will help you see inside while you're tinkering. I built a huge gaming beast inside of a Rosewill Thor case. It's blacker than a nigger and dark as a cave inside. Was a real pain to find stuff even with good lighting.

And go with a modular power supply. Only use the power cables you need.

Not the best time with the GPU shortages going on. I'd run out and grab a 1050 TI or RX 560 4GB immediately. Scour the used market for 1060s, better option if you can get one. Before you decide on anything else buy a GPU. For a $500 budget you'll want to stay below 175.

Figure a Ryzen 5 CPU is your best bet, maybe an Intel dualcore for Total War? Don't know how it's optimized. Check reviews. You want a B350 board if Ryzen and B250/H270 if Intel. CPU budget $150ish. Good boards start about $70

Splurge for 16GB RAM if you can, I've had games demand >8 even on medium. Sometimes higher speed RAM is the same price, brand matters little. Though I've never had luck buying G.Skill

Seagate SSHD Hybrid drive, people overlook these. Surprisingly effective. Full on solid state is out if your budget.

Read PSU reviews to find the good cheap models, 400w minimum here. Same deal with cases, there are good sub $50 choices. Read reviews. Buy on aesethics.

Look around for Windows10 keys. Can buy one for $15 or just run it unactivated.

Desktops rock compared to laptops & tablets. But everybody gets PC issues, and it hurts so much more when you custom build your rig and it still acts up. In the end your time isn't mostly spent shopping parts, but on maintaining what you bought. So the operating system you choose makes a big difference, and the compatibility of the parts. I just bought an ethernet card that seemed great, but the installation disc didn't install the card (made in China). Fair warning.

Yes! It's well worth getting a big case with modular panels and plenty of hidden cord access points. If only to spare yourself some agitation.

If possible even see what your chosen motherboard and cooling unit look like once placed in the case of your choosing. I went with a Thermal take F51 Suppressor and with the silly plastic bits on my ROG motherboard it was a bit of a tight fit around the edges.

Then again if you're spending less than 100 or 150 on a board it should be relatively bare-bones and easy to fit into whichever case you choose. Make sure there's clearance space plus a bit on the main cooling unit you place on the CPU as well - but if you've assembled before I'm sure you've got this all as second nature.

Just wondering what you splurged on in regards to a keyboard; as someone who does a lot of typing for my job on my home computer it's also something I feel is important to sink a bit of money into (less so for those who are less specific in their tastes, or easier on their keyboards in general) I'm always interested in what people are using. (I use a Kingston HyperX Alloy Mechanical - got a fancy mouse just for the fuck of it but I'd honestly need to check the box/drivers to get the specs)

The only main requirement I need on a keyboard is that it be mechanical. Drives the wife crazy when I wake up at 5:30am and don't go to the living room laptop before starting up one of my giant autistic effort-posts or replying to my work e-mail. I can't stand those flimsy plastic ones, I require something that needs a bit of force to push down the keys otherwise I'm all over the place when I type.

Big cases move a lot of air and keep your parts cool. This is the one I've been running for 2 or 3 builds

I have the thermaltake poseidon, it's brown switches so not too loud and just the right amount of tap to it, I think I spent 80 on it.

Nice. I like keyboards with similar minimalist designs, in terms of size and unnecessary extra buttons. An increase in usable desk space and ease of transportation are often-overlooked aspects, I find (but then, my workspace tends to be fairly cluttered and disorganized on the average day).

I build PC's for friends and family and won't step past Windows 7. With Windows 10 you might as well give Facebook and the CIA an office in your house

He mentioned Total War. Thats DX12 man. If you need security you just drop Windows all together as well as most modern hardware(the CPUs have backdoors built into em)
