What are some good options? Dual boot? I'd love to walk away from Microsoft

A secure OS is generally one that's a pain to install. Linux distros without auto-install. If you manually set the location for registry and other common files they won't be where viruses/hackers expect them to be. Also encryption. This is all second hand though, I know hardware not software.

Alright goys, I found a pre-built. I wasn't looking to. But the deal was for $599. I'm not sure about it. I got on it at the store and it said on "can you run it" they recommend an i7 for fallout and some others. Do I need an i7? It has a year warranty. Which seems inferior to the five year warranties you get when you just buy the parts.

the problem i have with rigs is that if you post a rig, someone else will critique it saying you should replace this with that, then someone else will do the same, it's like you can never get a concrete answer on is my rig good enough that im about to buy?

Seems pretty solid, an i7 is not necessary for gaming, some games love cores most only use one. If you want to buy a gtx1070 in the future you'll need a bigger power supply as well.

How big is the case? If you're going to want to upgrade piecemeal you'll want some extra room and more fans, especially for the GPU. They get pretty hot....and long....and big....🤣🤣🤣

Or get a bigger, badder case later on and move the stuff over when you're ready.

I wouldn't recommend that rig, decent enough but at that price you could put something way better together. Especially with that power supply and mobo, no room to change anything without replacing both (ram or crossfire).

If you're gonna have a 1050ti might as well use the on board graphics. Better off getting one of the new Ryzen chips and boards and a 290 on sale that could kill it. But also looking forward, you get a board with 2 ram slots and 1 PCIe 3.0 if you wanna add to it you gotta just replace and take the loss on it

1050ti is actually pretty powerful for its price point, onboard graphic would shit the bed on settings the 1050ti could handle. The 290 sucks down so much power and makes a lot more heat than a 1050, which would require a bigger case and more fans. For his price point it would be cheaper to go the micro-atx route. If he wants a better computer he can just buy a new case and mobo in 3 years

I'm always very skeptical of pre-built and, despite the cursing, I actually do enjoy the end result of assembling a machine of my own. I don't have the time to price those parts out right now, is that cheaper than buying from Newegg and the like separately?

And again, the jump to 16gb RAM is a relatively cheap one with very real benefits for the value. But you can always buy more later.

Just remember the CPU is the real heart of the machine. Personally for future proofing purposes and constant data processing/mining the i7 is worth it (I did buy my parts around Xmas last year so I got the 6700k for
Iike $150 off - if it wasn't June I'd almost suggest waiting... I know that can be a real bitch though, but it will have real, tangible benefits).

Let us know what you decide on, interested on seeing the finished product. Seems there are other posters waaay more knowledgeable about midrange parts than myself.

Dunno about better, but it's certainly fascinating what people can do. I've seen versions that do use used parts, which can be a turn-off for some.

what's the cheapest you can get a rig nowadays that can play a couple year old games games decently? 600-1000? i feel like 1000 is the minimum for a good rig

I can't help much. I always built new machines for my work as Software Engineer in the graphics field and I always end up paying 1200-1500 for a new machine, but then they are top of the line.

You can get a NVidia 10 gfx card for 130$ or so, I would go for a 4GB memory though for gaming. Unless you have important documents that you want to backup (which you can do with an external service anyway) you may want to think if you need a HD at all. a 500GB-1TB SSD might be sufficient and you can save 80$ or so if you dont get a HD for backup.

Watercooloer is fine but you wont fit that into that budget so you have to live with the loud aircooler
