The Newshub poll was a final kick in the guts for the Greens - their vote shredded to single digits. But for Labour, it was a massive vindication of the change of leader.
Jacinda Ardern has taken them to 33.1% in the poll, up nine points. National was on 44.4% support, down one. NZ First was on 9.2%, down almost four points.
But those won't be the numbers worrying National.
Ardern shot to 26.3% as preferred PM on the Newshub poll, just behind Bill English at 27.7%. In 2008, once John Key started out-polling Helen Clark as preferred PM, it was all over.
Parliament still has just over a week to sit before rising for the election campaign. The last few weeks have been turbulent, shocking, and tumultuous. The Beehive and surrounding precincts feel like they are in a permanent state of high alert.
These new poll numbers will lend an even sharper edge to the final countdown.

National won't be panicking yet. On the Newshub numbers Ardern has only robbed Peter to pay Paul - Labour is up at the expense of the Greens, and NZ First.

Metiria Turei has resigned as Green Party co-leader, saying scrutiny of her family over her past welfare history had become unbearable.
While she was at pains to say her decision to resign was not the result of learning bad poll results, a Newshub-Reid Research poll released tonight showed the Greens had lost a third of its party vote.
It plummeted 4.7 points to 8.3 per cent. National was down .8 to 44.4 per cent, Labour was up 9 points to 33.1 per cent and New Zealand First was down 3.8 points to 9.2 per cent.
Turei has been under growing pressure after she admitted to historical offending while on the benefit 20 years ago.

POLL MAKES NUMBER 3 NUMBER 4 AND NUMBER 4 IS NOW NUMBER 3
Winston Peters' New Zealand First party has overtaken the Greens as third biggest political party, according to the latest Newshub-Reid Research poll.
NZ First is sitting on 9.2 percent of the party vote, while the Greens are nearly one point behind on 8.3 percent.
The result is a drop from the 13 percent NZ First got in Newshub's July 31 poll, but it's still the third highest result ever for the party.

Prime Minister Bill English says US President Donald Trump's warning that threats from North Korea will be met with "fire and fury like the world has never seen" are not helpful in a tense environment.
President Trump issued the warning following reports that North Korea had developed a miniaturised nuclear weapon that could fit in its missiles.
Within hours, North Korea's state media said the country was considering a strategy to strike the US Pacific territory of Guam with mid-range missiles.
"I think the comments are not helpful in an environment that is very tense," Mr English told reporters as he went into parliament on Wednesday.
"Everyone wants to avoid military confrontation and the path ahead is for North Korea to comply with UN sanctions and for international pressure to push them in that direction."
Mr English said New Zealand's concern had not been conveyed to the US administration.
"We haven't yet, but certainly if that type of commentary continued, we would," he said.
"I'm worried those comments are not helpful... I think you have seen the reaction from North Korea that indicates that kind of comment is more likely to escalate than to settle."
