Hwy stande ge ealne dag idele?
Is that old English?
It is indeed-well spotted! It translates as 'why do you stand around all day idle'? Good one to commit to memory!
The main thing I learned about old English was that wh was originally hw in Old English.
Yes that is right and people are often baffled by words beginning with wh which are usually interrogatives such as why, where, when, which, who etc.
English-core English words are all Germanic. The language of the common Englishman is far more Germanic than the middle class would be Norman imposters. It is the longer and hyphenated words which are not truly English.
I am aware, but it is still far too removed from its Germanic roots for my tastes.
English, OE and ME are part of the West Germanic language group but there is evidence that it is actually more ancient than that and predates West Germanic. Germanic colonisation to southern Britain is far older than the Anglo-Saxon invasions of the mid 5th century.
I was on the Duolingo German for a while about 2 years ago. I got to where I can read simple German now.
That's a cool little app. I just wish it explained it more instead of just throwing you to the wolves and letting you trial and error your way through the lesson. But it's still very good to learn the basics of a language.
Yeah I'm working on learning Chinese, it's actually pretty fun
For learning the basics (speaking only) I'd recommend pimsleur. It teaches you to hold basic conversation quite rapidly.Duolingo is also great as some others have noted.
I dont have a russian keyboard so converting from english to russian is sometimes difficult especially with regard to grammar. But yes you are right. I know quite a bit of russian. I am on level 2 of 3 in Rosetta stone, which would be categorized as intermediate.
doesnt Π« mean "y" in english?
The website version of Duolingo has grammar information. The app versions, unfortunately, do not.
no. it has specific pronunciation
everybody i advice you to use this site
Wow thanks chief, I am always on the lookout for language learning tools, especially Russian ones.
I will add links to resource compilations for various languages to the opening post. Redditors have put together good lists. I do hate that website in general though...
why?
Why do I hate reddit? Because it is full of leftist faggots.
