I see there are a number of Linux users on this forum. Years ago I tasked myself with transitioning from Windows to Linux and it's been successful for the most part. One thing that took so long for the transition was finding the right distro to settle in with. So I guess you can say I'm a "distro hopper". The number of choices in Linux are huge and can seem a little quite overwhelming for a new comer.

For my desktop PC, I am using Puppy Linux (Independent) at the moment and it's great! I'm using JWM desktop as I prefer traditional, lightweight window mangers without all the eye candy that just hogs resources.

I've got Raspbian running on my Raspberry Pi which seems to work quite nicely too. I want to try some out programming and electronics tinkering with this little device. These units can be purchased quite cheap too!

Which Raspberry Pi do you have? I have the first one but I never really used it that much, it was unbelievably slow for me. Was thinking about getting a model 3 and installing EmulationStation on it

i use ubuntu

some say it has backoors and whatnot but ive tried puppy linux and mint along with a few others, they are all good

ubuntu is just easier to use

Bodhi Linux for a clean, lightweight distro that runs smoothly on machines 10+ years old.

I use Mint (Cinnamon) for my laptop, really like the Debian repositories. I have been thinking about Fedora (Workstation/RedHat), if anybody is running it, may you give a review?

Edit: I've decided to learn more about how Linux operates, in the future my plan is this. Mint(Currently)-->Slackware(Void maybe)-->Gentoo

I am a Linux admin irl. My companies used sles, rhel and Ubuntu (headless of course). And I found all 3 distros pretty good. There is nothing shitty about them. I myself use CentOS, fedora and Ubuntu with gnome. I am rather agnostic in this regard.
Just one thing: if you want to get shit done and don't have time to configure your life away don't use arch Linux or gentoo.

I'm agnostic re distros, but I am an evangelist for Linux whatever flavor. No one should live on the bill gates/Windows/Microsoft or Apple tits.

i was using Ubuntu 3-4 years ago and then they installed some spyware with it and a bunch of folks got angry about it and i just went back to windows

Currently running Ubuntu 16.04, and Raspian on my RasPis. I have been pretty interested in ArchLinux lately, but I just like a desktop/workstation that "works" because I don't have the time or patience to fiddle with my computer after work since I have a software developer job.

Currently, I'm trying to learn how to use Kali Linux with all the security suites. Also pretty interested in Tails for similar reasons.

I used puppy quite a while ago, I didn't really like the package manager, but it was impressively lightweight. Are they still actively maintaining it? I was also under the impression it wasn't exactly set-up for Desktop but more for live-USB or live-CD.

I used to use Gnome Classic, LXDE and XFCE, but it's nice to know about new ones. I loathe the new Gnome and Unity. MATE and Cinnamon are pretty good too.

Can anyone elaborate on hardware that is problematic with Linux? I bought a Mint CD a while back because all this image download stuff was overly complicated, and it seemed to load but never worked. When computer shopping, I read reviews where people claimed they had to replace graphics cards or whatnot in order to run Linux. How does one know if their system is Linux compliant?

I use Windows and its built-in Ubuntu Bash shell, it's pinned on my taskbar

And I also use Linux on VMWARE when I need to do something with VPN securely.. For example registering on google, because they detect location with stored cookies (from previous sessions), google background services, etc...

Nothing with Ubuntu 16.04. I loaded it and it ran every piece of hardware. Previously I was running Windows 7 and had to load drivers on every reinstall. It's safe to assume that if you're running non exotic hardware Ubuntu will have the drivers built in. Ubuntu even reads my UPS battery level with no additional prog while on Win7 it took a separate prog to read the battery level.

yeah there was a big hubbub

it was watching what you did within the the OS and i think would result in targeted advertising when you went online - probably Windows is doing the same thing today with all their telemetry

i like Linux but i dont really understand where everything is kept within the folder system. on windows i've learned it now
