Making Shields

The round Viking shield seems popular. This is probably the most wieldy and appropriate shield for running street battles (in a self defensive capacity). I guess the simplest way to make them would be to use tongue and groove planks pre cut into a circle when fit together, glued. Possibly with two layers with glue between them, horizontal and vertical. The ones I've seen seemed to cut from a single piece.

Good old fashioned ply wood is way stronger than any tongue & groove glued joint. Ever try to ax a piece of plywood (not osb particle board)?

Sure, but for simplicity of construction. Also two layers vertical and horizontal will be pretty solid. Axe blows are not expected.

Do you mean get one plywood sheet and cut it out? That could work.

Simple plywood, some cheap form of metal edge material you can find, lots of wood glue, some fabric.
The center piece can be bought/improvised or just make the shield flat without that and adjust the handle somewhat (bad handling).

Riot shields look like roman ones for a reason, they cover a big area, including legs, and work as a wall if needed.

And even the non-metal ones look neat

In the past they used shields like this, which is also good for punching. But they don't cover as much. They are easily made at home tho.

Something I personally like is uniformity, where everyone has the same uniform, shield, (and)or flag it makes a nice detail and is aesthetic.

Me and my friends made this when we were messing around with sword fighting like 15 years ago. All it took was 1'' pliewood, some u bolts and nuts and some fabric for the handle. The padding and tape around the edges were there to stop wear and tear on the practice swords

The British often use the round ones.

They're better for mobility versus defence.

I always laugh when I see woman police officer. Once I screamed at one woman police officer: "Get back in the kitchen!" x=)

I've been in riots. In the Iraq war protest people were being batoned and maced but the police were calm and doing their job. There was one woman officer I saw who was just totally freaking out, screaming and pointlessly hitting everybody with her shield.

• To do what you describe you would need a table saw, jointer, planer and bar clamps to make panels and most people don't own or have access to that.

• Unless i'm reading you wrong it seems you're suggesting to pre-cut the individual pieces so they'll form a circle when glued up? Way easier to just make the panel then cut it to shape after glue up.

- Easiest thing for most would be getting a 'project panel round' which are circular panels that many hardware stores sell. All you have to do is get some screws, washers, handle, and rope/strap for inner forearm lashing.

• If you have access to a bandsaw then cutting your own from plywood and adding the handle/lashing would accomplish the same. You could also cut it out with a router and jig but that's beyond most.

Not at all. Just draw a circle on the planks then hacksaw it.

True, you'd probably want to take a belt sander (or just by hand) to it after to get it nice and flush/smooth but that would work.

You can get store bought rounds for the same cost as a 4'x4' plywood sheet.

@Azzmador posted pics of a dozen or so shields some guys made that have the Black Sun painted on it, they're fucking spectacular. I'm most interesting in finding out how they did that. Cutting out a template, just taping it off by hand, what?

A template and spraypaint would be best. It's quite a simple shape and you could draw it.
