Who programs? What's the best way to get a career? I used teamtreehouse for a bit but recently took a break but will probably hop on it again soon. Have any tips?

I assume teamtreehouse is an online tutorial of some sort? There are a few of them and many .pdf format books you can download for free on coding/programming. All of the information is public domain so be cautious about parting with $ in exchange for it unless you're planning to get a BS or higher in Computer Science.

Learn iOS and write some simple apps or games for iOS devices. Likewise Java and will be useful for browser apps. You may want to tackle Python right away and get directly into object oriented programming. The more coding you learn the better you will be at it.

We need programmers and this is a skill that you can develop in your spare time. Keep your first projects simple, so that they won't overwhelm you.

There's free tutorials available in app store as well - I just downloaded this one (circled). It didn't ask me to sign up for anything and it looks pretty good for a start before you try to tackle tech manuals.

If you can't manage one of these tutorials then programming probably isn't for you. It doesn't mean you're dumb, just lack aptitude/motivation for this particular subject.

If your goal is to make a game or an app there are builders for that but they're clumsy and if you want to make something spectacular or unique you will have to DIY from the ground up - This means programming.

IMO, concepts are more important than languages.

learn about algorthims, data structures, data types, etc

Whichever language you choose, your best learning tool is pencil and paper. There are some great development environments that take a lot of grunt work out of programming, but if you want to learn then that grunt work is exactly what you want to be doing.

I did all of my undergraduate work with a text editor and command line compiler. I never used an IDE until after college.

I'm starting with website coding languages, HTML, CSS; Javascript. When I become more advanced I'll be using nodejs (excecute JS outside browser) and Electron (code library from Github) which makes it possible to create desktop applications, using the languages above, without having to tailor it to each OS.

What's the best way to get a career?

I actually got my first "Developer" job in your neck of the woods. Certifications helped me get it. Company's not there anymore. If you can't show experience from a job, having a certification in it is better than nothing, might help you break in the business.

I programme. Use python: Flask, django for web development. It has 20+ vrameworks for web development. Gui kirie/tkinter etc. Matplotlib/scipy/etc pandas. Awesome language , so efficient and East to read. I did a whole lot of evening classes like fonzy from happy days but my lecturer always told me that you'd learn to code on your own. Pick a project web scraping, dj3 whatever build it start to finish. Relying on employm3nt without a degree in computer science (((which is retarded, as whatever you learn becomes obsolete))) is not advisable. You must start. You must finish.

Java engineer here. It's a pretty good living: tons of companies bought into the Java hype, so there's always jobs. Java also means you can develop for Android.

I'd also suggest learning:
Javascript,
HTML + CSS,
Python or Ruby
Awk
Linux (Debian or Red Hat)

C++ is a dragon - it's powerful but dangerous. You'd be better off learning C#.

Unfortunately, getting a CS degree is the best way to get in the door. It used to be you could get hired on with IT and work your way up to software or system engineer. Unless you know somebody, it's unlikely you're going to get any decent jobs sans degree.

Sorry, but you sound like someone who has never coded outside of a hobby. Legacy code, especially street-shitter-level, is hell.

it seems Java and or C#/.NET is where the jobs are.

c/c++ are common in embedded systems, robotics and certain quatitative disciplines like algo/quant trading but these jobs typically require a hard science background in addition to ample coding skills

learning basic SQL is a must as well. lots of non programming jobs require programming skills these days

I can't believe I forgot SQL. SQL + MySQL can get you very far in life.

I've always loved robotics and embedded systems, but the jobs require a significant understanding of low-level hardware (EE background really helps). I frankly can't wrap my head around EE, so I moved more to the enterprise software world.

If you want a leg up as well, learn AWS Cloud stuff.

alot of business analyst type jobs require some SQL skills to pull data.

ive heard some say programming is a good skill to have in addition to whatever career you have as opposed to just programming as a job.

alot of industries hate programmers because good, solid code written by white/eastern asians costs lots of money so there is also a push to outsource this shit.
