I thought they were brilliant so I was pretty hyped up before watching the actual movie. And man was I disappointed! It was fucken Ridley Scott, one of the greatest and most revered directors in the Hollywood. This was his baby, he must have put a lot of thought and consideration into the story over a long period of time. I'm absolutely speechless, not even Alien3 and 4 were this bad.

In the final sequence of the film Ripley asserts her sovereignty over her own body, abandons Mother, going into a smaller ship named Narcissus, and forcibly uses metal hooks to eject the alien from her ship. But the alien attempts to remain connected to the ship through a cord which runs from the center of the alien body to the center of Ripley’s body. Ultimately the alien is burned away. The designer of the alien is the Dutch artist H.R. Geiger, who is known for producing very strange art dealing in torturous ways with themes of fertility, contraception and abortion.

Ripley, the modern woman, rebels against the joint program of imperialism, capitalism, war and reproduction, all in one act of forcible expulsion from the narcissistic self. In the words of Camille Paglia, abortion is an act of revolt against the “fascism of nature.”

I'll give you points for Alien allegory but it can also be seen as an invasive hostile racial vector that foolish Dallas (European city until recently) opened the airlock (city gates) to the foreign presence.

So it arrived in the craft, incubated and emerged to spread racial chaos and violence.

Only through Ripley, essentially the Sophia-type figure to purge the racial vector by any means than risk the core-racial structure of the homeworlds be infected. Hence the requirement to abort the enemy via the airlock and ships main engines to cleanse the threat completely...

Honestly, it was so long ago that I saw it (when it first came out) that I don't remember the specifics, I just remember being disappointed. I was quite excited at the release initially. I'm sure if I were to watch it again I'd see all sort of poz - White man evil, poor innocent injuns slaughtered, etc. I was a normie at the time also, so..

I thought it was kinda cool. The underwater diving sequence was off the charts. Hard to film that using normal actors too.

I should rewatch it I guess, I only vaguely remember the underwater sequence. But I remember leaving the theater with a visceral hatred of Jeunet that I'd seldom if ever felt for any other director. To my younger self, it felt like a complete betrayal of the concept and tone of the franchise (not counting the AvP crap that I never watched).

I thought as far as sci-fi stuff goes it was a decent-enough movie. Good setting and atmosphere, outerspace pirates and private militaries. Good world building you don't see in hardly any movies nowadays that are sci-fi.

Not true. His breakthrough film was Delicatessen in '91 (pretty good, though not my cup of tea), then The City of Lost Children in '95 (good I think, saw it while stoned and thought it was amazing), then Alien: Resurrection in '97. I don't hate him as a director, but he was the wrong fit with the material and didn't seem to make an effort to fit the franchise imo. His sensibilities are too goofy and French.
