They've already started paying restaurant workers $15 an hour or so in Portland. So to recoup the loss the owners pay the non-tipped staff less while allowing them part of the wait staffs tip share. The result is less take home pay for everyone; the cooks don't make as much if there's a lackluster table service and the waitstaff has less tax free tip money.
Compounding the problem are new technologies in the way of food delivery service apps. If you tip on Uber Eats or Waiter, none of the tip money goes to the person who cooked the food or put the order together.
Now all of that doesn't really apply to automation, but it's an example of how an unforeseen technology can impact low level work and wages.
