grub and boot-repair shouldn't mess with your data. They are most likely operating on separate partition(s) of the disk.
Even if you can't boot or you do screw things up, you should be able to boot another OS (say linux from USB) and mount the partition your home directory is on (say your primary disk /dev/sd0sN, where N is some small integer like 2) to access (read/write, e.g., copy) your data to another storage medium, if necessary.
If you don't actually have any data, then I'd just reinstall the OS, rather than spend a bunch of time fucking with grub. Hell, you may be able to reinstall while preserving your data (but it's a risk).
