What should I look for in a VPN Router?

Don't use a VPN router.

The problem with VPN routers is they won't drop your connection if the VPN doesn't connect, so you'll be naked without knowing it. I don't know about you but I want to know for sure when I am and aren't connected to a VPN.

I use PIA vpn wtih their cutoff thing, it automatically cuts my computer off the internet if the VPN drops out. This only works on your computer though and not a router.

I haven't heard of any reason not to use OpenVPN. You can also take it a step further and use Tor threw OpenVPN to take it further. I was once told that understanding the location of your exit node for openvpn should be considered. From what I remember is that Switzerland has the toughest privacy laws. I'm no lawyer and know nothing about Switzerland. Its just something I was told one time. So take that for what its worth.

Yes you just need to find a OpenVPN service that is reasonably priced. I don't want to promote any specific site here but there are sites that offer OpenVPN lifetime for the range of $40 -$50. Now like Anglin said they are more than likely NSA honeypots.

What I did was use PIA vpn

I did some research and I trust their level of privacy but you have to look into it yourself and see what you reckon.

The installation was pretty easy, I downloaded the .deb file from https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/pages/client-support/ and just opened it and everything worked. It asks you for username and password (which is emailed to you) but I think that was about it.

I paid with bitcoin and used a new email address because I don't want them to have my real name.

Another thing you can do which is probably better but more time consuming to set up is buy a VPS service (again pay with bitcoin) and set up your own private VPN server. A good site to find one on is lowendbox (just google for it).

Try to install it first before you pay for anything just in case, but it worked for me. Kali is based on Debian which is what Ubuntu is based on.
