Can't build things with a long service life otherwise people will buy our product less often, and you wouldn't want the economy to slow down goy, must protect the "e cohen my" at all costs. Plus make a killing on scheduled maintenance.
I just bought a new phone that I can't even replace the battery in, once the battery shits out time to throw it away and buy a new one.
Cars (and almost any other product) are specifically designed not to be maintenanced by the owner let alone rebuilt, none of the cars made today are going to be classics that get restored as it will be impossible to find all the various plastic pieces that make them up. Gotta keep buying new.
Meanwhile the people making this stuff isn't us anymore since manufacturing has been exported, and our nations wealth is bled from us model year after model year.
Plus there's the consumerism mindset of always having to have latest and greatest, purchased self worth, buying into a lifestyle (ie. I bought a Harley so I'm a biker now), etc.
