For someone who hasn't operated beyond MS Paint in his entire 15+ years on desktop PCs (minus some minor Photoshop attempts in high school), paint.net bridged the gap between professional program and usable program for a design simpleton like myself. Though to be fair, I am just now starting to use it to make some rudimentary DS propaganda.
And Twilight app for my mobile devices is an absolute NECESSITY. I cannot sleep after a night using a screen without it, it does a great job at blocking out the disruptive blue light. Oh, and naturally, VLC and foobar are the best visual and audio media players, both free last time I checked.
